tried to run the 504 today, started up but its backfiring steady, it ran fine when I put it away , tried to adjust the timing but no change, if I pull the #1 plug wire it quit backfireing, if i hold the wire at the dist and make it arc the backfiring quits but if i start putting it under load it starts backfiring again, pulled the plug and it looks good , nice tan /white color, plug wires are newer and in good shape, any ideas?

Just because a plug look like it should does not say it is good. I would move that plug to a different cylinder and see if the problem follows the plug. Also if the plug wires are the carbon type wire made for a car/truck they too could be your problem. You need real wire plug wires on tractors. Or you might have the carb set to lean or a valve sticking or set wrong

(quoted from post at 06:04:51 06/03/18) what are my options on fixing this?

Remove the rocker cover. Identify the offending valve, squirt some oil around the stem and then tap the top of the stem gently with a hammer. You WILL need to remove the rocker assembly first, and then adjust ALL of the valves when you put it back together.

As I was reading his description of what it was doing , I was thinking the exact same thing: Stuck Valve. Sounds like intake on the #1 cylinder.
