Farmall 340 wobbles in 5th gear

Hi all I just recently purchased a 1959 Farmall 340 wide front row crop tractor and when I run it 5th gear I get a wobble in the tractor. How do I go about fixing this.

There are several places that can affect the wobble. The universal joints in the shafts all the way from the steering wheel to the front bolster
(casting). second is the worm and sector inside the bolster. There are are bearings and clearances to be checked. (see diagram) the third is the
pivot bearings for the lower bolster casting. (above where the wheels are attached). Very out of balance tire can also be responsible. Combinations of
these can be cumulative. Start with the Ujoints by holding the lower shaft front Ujoint rigid, then turning the steering wheel left and right to
witness loose guide bearings or Ujoints. Next move that lower Ujoint and watch the wheels. Looseness there in internal to the bolster. They can
wobble with as little as 4 inches of rotational freeplay at the rim of the wheel. Jim

Another possibility is incorrect toe in, it should be around 1/8 to 3/16. I've found that to be a problem on several tractors I've had.

When something like this happens, don't look at the sky and daydream. Observe. Try to determine where the wobble is coming from. Are the front wheels shaking back and forth? There's your wobble. Is one wheel bouncing up and down? There's your wobble.

It can't be nothing. Just look around. Tell us what you see. Then we can try to address it.
