Is that when they

So when they rebuilt the 560 rear ends, is that when they came with the Hy-Tran fluid, and if the 560 got the final upgrade like Pete 23 said, did they get two Asterik's in the serial number plate, or how did Harvester keep track of it ?

No extra marks but a couple things outside to look for to tell if a couple more improvements were added.

On my 560D it has a diamond stamped on the serial number plate and a number 1 following. was told by a mechanic that worked on them at the time that they were the ones that got the 750 lb. box of replacement parts. after 1960-61 they all had the new replacement parts in them from the factory. My 560 is a 1959. I heard others on here that know more of the story, and some more then IH.

Yes, the diamond stamp is for that major update of gears , bearings etc. BUT, like I said, they kept updating and updating. It was long after 61 when some of the last updates were installed. I also indicated there are ways to tell from the outside if most latest updates are in the tractor. You can look at the right hand brake and differential area and see the extension of the tapered shim that is used on the right side differential housing. That shim allows for better tapered roller bearing alignment of the differential under heavy load. On top of the platform, there is an extra bolt head protruding that holds the latest lubrication tube. I am not sure if it is covered by the seat or not. I installed them but that was over 50 years ago so can't remember. Along with that tube , the differential and bull pinion support housing is drilled so a flow of oil comes directly onto the bull pinion and bearing. I drilled a few of those housings also.

You cannot see if the pinion bearing is a roller or ball from the outside along with the axle bearings. Inner went to flat roller, outer went to a newer ball bearing with more relief from axle deflection under load and also because the inner roller has some up and down play in it.

So, it really boils down to having to take a look inside unless you have one of the very last ones to roll off the line.

I installed ten of those 750 pound update packages in 460 and 560 tractors. Also, put a package in a F450 gas tractor. Then, as any problems arose, installed the latest changes . IH had a super good price on a bearing package but customer had to pay labor on that near the end of production time. Put in some of them packages as well.
