IH454 just stopped

Started easily and sounded very good for 30 minutes then engine just died.
Electrics seem ok so went to fuel filters.
Primary was very clogged so changed both and now have clear flow right up to inlet of injection pump.
No lift pump that I can find but fuel level topped up to be sure of a head.
I cannot get any pressurized flow at all on cranking.
Any thoughts on other causes before removing the injector pump to strip and check it ?

It all depends on how it dies. If it sputters and dies it?s fuel. If it just
quits and doesn?t sputter it?s electric. If it?s fuel you have to check the
flow from the tank to the transfer pump or electric fuel pump. If that?s
good check the flow from the transfer/electric fuel pump to the
injection pump. If that?s no good then it?s the transfer pump. If that?s
good then you check the pressure coming out of the injection pump.
If that?s good check to fuel filters then to injections.

Doesn't sound good, that engine has no fuel pump, electric or mechanical to supply the injection pump, gravity flow through the filters to the pump is what you have. Bosch VA pump has it's own vane pump and will draw and pressurize the injection pump as needed. Parts for that pump are very hard to find anymore, if anything is broken inside. I did have one in recently that needed the shaft bushings replaced and sized due to leaking drive seal..

Hi Williford, on my brother's 454 the STOP/START/RUN cable suddenly broke at the lever on the side of the injection pump. So check
the function of this cable.
Did you check the banjo fitting bolts? Sometimes junk can plug the hole in the banjo bolt.

To bleed, put STOP/START/RUN lever in START position, throttle about 1/4 open, attempt to start engine DO NOT CRANK engine for
more than 30 seconds at a time or the starter could over heat. If engine does not start, loosen one injector line at rear of
injection pump and attempt another start. If previous attempts fail, slightly pressurize the fuel tank and try another start.

Thanks to all for the comments.
If the injector pump has its own integral vane pump to feed it and there is fuel at the inlet, will it need priming at any one of the 3 outlets?
Or will pressurising the tank help with this ?

I am sure the banjo fittings are clear of debris but will double check the cables when next on site.

Remember to give the starter TIME to cool. All too often I see people crank for 30 seconds, wait a whole whopping FIVE SECONDS, then start cranking again.

If you're going to do that you may as well just keep cranking because five seconds isn't enough time to let the starter cool down.

Hi Williford, loosening 1 injector line at rear of injection pump allows air out of pump while cranking the engine.

My brother has 5 of these tractors, a 454 and 495 with D-179 engines, 474 and 3230 with D-206 engines and a 684 with D-239 engine.
When he changes fuel filters and bleeds the filters the D-179s and D-206s usually start right up. The D-239 has always been more
difficult requiring loosening injector lines and some times a little air pressure in the tank will work.

Pressurising the tank a little whilst cranking will be the next step this weekend after checking the cables again.
Thanks for your comments.

After sending the pump off to a diesel engineer he concluded the pump was good.
Re fitted and after much cranking he opened up a main gallery plug to release any air, that
with a much longer cranking time than I had previously achieved got the engine started ok.
Now to get the tick over set up.

Thanks for all comments posted much appreciated.
