alternator on a Farmall A.

If you add an alternator to an A or B, etc does it need to be protected from rain. The generators on these tractors were closed up pretty good but an alternator has some openings on the end. I've been covering mine but its a pain to remember or not to forget if I start the tractor. I can only keep my tractor outdoors.

I have never had any problem with rain and alternators. Ya in the winter most sit in the machine shed but in the summer as hay season comes on they sit out side and get rained on

MANY newer tractors that came equipped with alternators have them mounted where they are exposed to the elements.

Over time, they get dust and debris packed inside them that sets up some electrical corrosion when wet, which certainly doesn't do things any good, but they still perform for an acceptable amount of time between repair or replacement.

Rain/snow won't harm the alternator. I recommend however covering the alternator if the tractor is going to sit unstarted for several months

I have a 6 volt alternator on my B and snow doesn't hurt. I don't know about rain because when my tractor is not in use it is stored inside.

My tractors live under tarps year round. I try to keep the alternator under the hood as much as reasonably possible though, when designing the bracketry.
