SMTA Sediment bowl question

The carb. on my SMTA has been leaking a good while- yes, I have had a new carb. kit installed 3 or 4 yrs ago, but the running improved, but the leaking didn't stop. I try to stop the waste of gas by turning off the cutoff valve at the sediment bowl, but it only slows it down. A new assembly on this website is $16.00. Bates Corp. charges $30. I don't know about CIH.Once there was a discussion about sediment bowl assemblies, and someone was claiming that you get what you pay for. Is that really true, or is someone just a CIH employee trying to get into our pockets? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have found now days it is a catch 22. The quality of thing now days is not what it once was say 40 years ago. When I buy such things I try to find who has the best warranty and go with the best warranty. I buy a lot of stuff from my local O'Reilly's auto parts because of there warranty on things

Are you sure it's the bowl and shut-off? If the carb is still leaking after you close the valve, it may be from the gas still in the line from the bowl to the carb. Shut the valve, pull the gas line, and check if the valve is leaking. If it is a leaky valve, I would go with new original...... but I'm an original nut.

Good luck with that New Original Made In China sediment bowl assembly. I got one from my Case/IH dealer for my Super H about 1-1/2 years ago. I figured it would leak worse out of the box than my 64 year old factory installed part. The new part is not even close to the same as the original. I'll wrap some water valve stem sealing thread around the valve stem and stop the leak someday when the tank runs dry.

I also carry fire extinguishers on every gas or diesel unit. Every one. Very cheap protection.

I think it's a safe bet that there's only one place in the world making these things, and everyone's getting them from that place. Even with all this old tractor tinkering stuff going on there just isn't that much demand for these things, especially considering the typical buying habit of punching the part into google, and buying from the place that has the cheapest price. There simply isn't any incentive to have "good" ones made that are just going to end up sitting on a shelf.

The $10 free shipping from China one on ebay is the exact same one as the $15 one from the well-known online tractor parts supplier, and the $30 one you get from the local CaseIH dealer. I'm thoroughly convinced of that.

Also in my experience, the new ones don't seal completely either. I have a new one on a Cub and if left for several months, the gas will slowly "disappear" even with the fuel bowl shut off.

A PROPERLY rebuilt carburetor will NOT leak. Period.

I like to support the local people and then if it is not right they will stand behind it with replacement or money back.
Hopefully they will be around if enough people keep supporting them as it hard to get a quick part from china or online. cleddy

make sure the tank is empty remove the nut and unscrew the valve stem. replace the packing and inspect the stem and seat. Was it leaking around the stem? That would be the packing's bad. If not shutting fuel off that would be the stem and seat need to be re-seated. To do that you need a seat reamer, not hard to do.
