Fuel pump on a W9

Whats the deal with fuel pumps on a W9. I've known some people that said they had one but didn't use it and I saw one my self recently that had one not hooked up. Did all the W9's have them. Were they over kill or did something change that made them obsolete. The only W9 that I have experience with was one my Dad owned back in the early 60's and I don't remember a fuel pump. Maybe that was because I was only 8 or 9 at the time. He had a later model - I believe made in 1951.

i have a 1950 w9 . it had a fuel pump, but the diaphram is bad and it was bypassed. i see steiners now sells a rebuild kit.

the W9 went through so much gas it needed a pump to keep carb full. be ok on a full tank but once gas tank got low you needed help to fill carb. thats working under a heavy pull. putsin around yard would not matter. 335 cid probably not get the needle to seat working it.
