I have a customer who asked me to put new rings in this machine due to excessive blow by. I put new rings in it let the tractor run for long periods of time to make sure everything was good before taking it back to the customer. The customer used the machine to cut his pasture (it has a belly mower), made one round and machine shut down. It didn't lock up just shut down like it was out of fuel. The machine will start and then shut right back down. Is there anything that i can check for? Everything was put back as it was when it was taken apart. When the machine stalled we put a new carb kit on it thinking that was the problem but it's still doing the same thing. Please help....customer isn't happy with me because as he put's it, "it was running fine before he brought it to me, it just smoked." I think once this is resolved i'm closing up shop....it's not worth it.

thanks in advance to anyone that can help me

Get to the basics. Fuel, air, spark.

Is it running out of fuel? How's the sediment bowl filter? PLEASE tell me it doesn't have an in-line fuel filter; those are for vehicles with a fuel pump.

Is the coil getting hot and shutting down? Is the charging system allowing the battery to get too low to fire? Is something shorting out the ignition?

Lots of variables involved in the "science" of long-distance diagnosis.

The first thing I would check would be fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor. Often, the tank outlet becomes blocked with small debris. A little fuel will
seep through but tractor stalls.

You need to learn simple trouble shooting 101.

#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire of the distributor and at all 4 plugs that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#2 check that you have a good steady flow of gas out of the carb drain that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes.
#3 make sure the air cleaner is not needing service.

Also since you have just did a bunch of work to it make sure any and all wire connections are clean tight and bright could well be a simple loose wire

All the things said below are good to check, Only thing I didn't see was the coil. If a coil is going bad it may run for a while and when coil get hot it will cut out. Than come back when it cools down.

but would it do it even if it was on a cold start? You can start this and it will run for one second and then shut back down

Is it an IH carburetor? if so remove the 3/8" brass bolt on side of carb. That is your main meter Jet, take a fine piece of wire and run it through both holes side and end. blow out with air. see if that don't keep it running.

ok I will do what old iron and khouse said....i will let everyone know later today. tractor is at customer's house. I told him I would come help him work on it to try these suggestions and see if we can get it going

All good suggestions below. I will say that was a crappy thing for your customer to say. Guy's that make a comment like this
think they are the smartest guy in the room. Then, when you find the problem......switch, coil, whatever, he'll think you must
have done something to it and want you to pay for it.

You're exactly right Wicksfield....so here's an update. The problem is resolved. When I got the carb rebuild kit for him I asked him if he wanted me to take it apart and fix it. He said "no I can do it." So I let him do it. He called me yesterday and said that it's running now and runs great. I asked him what he did to fix it. He then decided to confess and told me that he did not use the entire rebuild kit for the carb. He only replaced one gasket where he thought the carb was pulling in air. So after going back into the carb and using the entire kit to rebuild the carb the machine now runs like it is supposed to.

So this could have been resolved Saturday afternoon if he had used the entire kit to rebuild the carb and I wouldn't have had to bother you fine folks who were good enough to take your time to help me.

I am forever grateful for those of you who have much more knowledge than I who help me get out of these situations.
