Common IH 656 three point hitch problems

Were there any common problems with the three point hitches on these, it wont raise itself, doesn't even seem to be trying internally? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do your aux valves , power steering etc work ok. The hitch has a seperate pump mounted piggy back on main pump and it's own relief valve. Could be hydraulic or mechanical problem like some linkage inside compartment under the seat.

Broke the shaft in my piggy back pump on my 666 and it wouldn't raise. Could be the pump. May be a valve but I suspect the pump as I have never had anything else wrong with mine. I think the new pump was around 300 bucks 4 years ago when I replaced mine.

we had the pto gear or idler up front that drives the hydraulic pump go bad or bearings go bad...long time ago forgot the details. I think we lost all hydraulic functions though. make sure you have pto and powersteering and remotes that operate correctly under load. and no mechanical noises when operating.

biggest issues with our hitch/hydraulics otherwise are condensation, leaky quadrant shaft seals, and failed friction washer for position control (see quadrant shaft seal leak).

Benjamin: I ran my 656, 15,000 hours and the hitch never failed. If there is a problem it must be operators of tractor's past.

There is a hose in the rearend on the suction side that can get a hole in it.But you would also have aux. problems.

Benjamin,...did you ever find the cause of your 3 pt. hitch problem? I also have a problem with my 656 Hydro 3 pt. hitch. The aux valves, power steering, and trans all seem to work fine, but the 3 pt. is more or less stuck toward the top and will only travel about 2 inches downward. The draft control also is very stiff, and drifts back toward the "heavy" setting when I move it toward "light".

I have a Farmall 656 that the 3 point doesn't always lift. You can move the lever to raise the hitch but the hitch may not move for a period of time then all of a sudden it'll raise, if I slightly move an aux lever it'll come right up. Trying to sell this tractor and not wanting to dump a load into it if this is something simple. I removed the top cover under the seat and checked the relief valve in the right front corner but it doesn't seem to be seeping much unless you deadhead it the hydraulics. aux and steering are fine, when hitch decides to lift it lifts fine even at low idle so I doubt pump is the problem. Any advice or ideas will be appreciated.
