I posted earlier about needing a thermostat for my 48H Several said that a 180 auto thermostat would work. I bought one, and the dia is 2in. That fits INTO, NOT ONTO the hole the thermostat goes in. I called NAPA, and they said they had no idea what there dias were without opening every box.
SO, for those who are using auto thermostats, What make of auto are you buying them for that the dias are around 2 1/4-2 1/2?
 
I just purchased one of these: A-387533R91, it's an aftermarket replacement thermostat for the factory style 160 degree. It's an A-I products item. I gave $32 with free prime shipping on amazon, but lots of other places have them too.
I had a stant 180 degree automotive thermostat in there, but the temp gauge would get between the O and T of HOT before the thermostat would open and I didn't care for it to consistently run this hot.
 
I think the flange diameter of the automotive thermostat that works is around 2.5"
For the 180 degree one it is Stant Part number 13078 I believe.
 
About 10 years ago I found a t'stat for a 70's era big block Oldsmobile (unfortunately I cannot recall the the year/model now...) fits and works perfectly.
 
I wanted to add to this post that I switched from the automotive style 180 degree thermostat where it wouldn't open until it was between the O and T of HOT on the temp gauge while just adjusting the carb in the garage with no load, over to the factory style replacement 160 degree thermostat and now the gauge barely moves off the stop on the far left side of COOL while discing the garden for 2 hours in 85 degree heat. I wish I would have tried drilling a hole in the 180 degree thermostat to work as a bypass. There needs to be a middle ground.
I am half temped to pull the thermostat housing apart again and do some more swapping.
