What years did the 560 have rear end or gear trouble, and what was this caused by, are they reliable now after this problem was changed, also do they start good when the engine is right?

I can't answer the question on bad rear ends. From what I understand they were either fixed or would no longer be around. My 560 D starts good, it does use glow plugs but if you follow the instructions on starting in the operator's manual it works good. I have one heavy 12 volt battery I think around 900 cca, and it spins over fine. I don't use it in the winter so not sure how it would do at 0 but have started it at around 20. It seems to do really good on fuel. I had some issues with mine when I first got it, hydraulic pump bad, but prior owner didn't think it had a hydraulic filter so never changed. Overall I really like my 560.

The bearing issues were addressed with stronger roller type bearings in the bull gears and other mods. A triangle was to be stamped into the serial number as a suffix when repaired. If it is alive and operating it has been upgraded. Jim

A 560 diesel is a darn good tractor. They run a long time on a tank full of fuel on a lighter load. On a 2 row cutter they will burn more.

the first year they came out in 1958. they are a darn good tractor that is easy on fuel. and yes when the engine is properly tuned they start very easy. mine starts with 2 revolutions of the engine after 40 sec. of glow plug warming. it has about 5500 hrs. on engine and never has had the head, injectors or pump off yet! 1963 model.

The problem was caused by putting 63HP through a rear end designed for 33HP. Internals were essentially unchanged from the 1939 Farmall M.

From what I understand they were starting to have some problems during 450 production, but apparently not enough to concern the bean counters, so the issue really got exposed in the next generation.

History would be so much different if IH had just stretched out 400 and 450 production to 1961 and concentrated on having the 806 ready to compete head on with the Deere 4010.

I have a late 1963 560 D. It is a very dependable tractor, easy on the fuel, nice power, and easy starting. I also have a 1959 560 G with an IH 2250 QT loader, great combo. The gasser is also very dependable especially during the cold MN winters. Both tractors have been great for me. No rear end issues. As with any tractor, they need to be taken care of and we need to be smart operators. If I could go back in time and could have influenced one change on the 560?s, it would have been the development of a variation of the 66 series shift for more gear selection.

The initial improvement package did not have Bower roller bearings on inner axle. Looked in on-line parts once and IIRC serial break is 30,00+ for the Bower bearings. Uncle had 1960 560 and original inners were later replaced with Bower roller bearings.
