Crankshaft pulley on 826

Friend has an 826 with the D358 engine. Crank pulley looks to be wobbling by about an eighth of a inch. How is this pulley held on? Is the pulley mounted in rubber like on a chevy v8? Any help will be appreciated.

If I remember correctly, the pulley on a Chevy V8 is bolted to the center of the damper. The outside ring of the damper is mounted in rubber.

I believe that engine uses a rubber mounted harmonic balancer pulley, BUT, it is a different animal than most pulleys. It is held on with a heavy washer and three bolts. Inside the pulley there are about six tapered spacer expanders. The pulley itself does not fit tight on the crankshaft. Those spacers have to be installed in a particular order for them to compress to hold pulley tight to crank shaft and also to keep from wobbling. There is an alignment pin the pulley engages in the seal spacer.

The reason I am not real sure if it has a rubber mounted pulley is there was a special pulley available for certain model tractors with the D 358 or D 310. I can't remember all these things. But here is what happened. IH decided that in certain applications, where the engine speed was not above I believe 2400 rpm rated load, that the crankshaft no longer needed the bolt on balance weights on the crankshaft. That created some weird vibration noises to take place and then they offered a package to correct it . I never had to install that package so don't really know what it consisted of , but I think it was just a different pulley.

So, the answer to your question is, something is wrong and pulley needs to come off. You do not need a puller as you remove the three bolts and first straight spacer, then give the pulley some good wacks in a few different spots with firm but not solid hammer or wood block. They usually pop loose but sometimes they can be very stubborn. Do not put a puller on it unless you are sure you are replacing the pulley.
