574 hydraulic system

Today, I put on my Vermeer TS 20 tree spade for the first time onto my 574. I couldn't figure out why the hydraulic system on the tractor was not working the different valves on the tree spade. Next I would
engage the hydraulic lever on the tractor and then I could activate the hydraulic valves on the tree spade. My question to all of you is this: IS there a way to change the system on my 574 to allow
the tree spade to run on the 574 hydraulics with out engaging the hydraulic lever on the tractor? Currently, I would have to engage the hydraulic lever with my foot and then run the levers on the
tree spade. When I push the hydraulic lever all the way down or in the locked position, I believe the system is in free flow without pressure-which will lower the cylinders not raise them. What am I
missing on this system to allow my to run this tree spade more efficiently without looking like a gymnast.

What you need is a power beyond plate for the valve stack. It will go on the side of the valves. This will have a hose/line to hook to for the pressure side. Then you can use the tree spade as you desire.
The lock position as you describe it is the float position on the lever. The float position will allow the pressure to dump on the lines for disconnecting couplers without pressure on them.
There is also a side mounted pump for using with accessories like loaders that has a dedicated job like running a loader or other hydraulic powered tools. You could also use that to run your spade with more speed. You will probably look in junkyards for the parts and will be kind of pricey. There is a pump mounting casting with the gear a filter housing and the lines. It all mounts on the right side of the transmission case. There is a round plate where it would bolt on.
Now you have about all the options for that tractor.

When we were using the remote hydraulic outlets on the IH 74/84 series tractors to run a log splitter or something with its own hydraulic valves we would use a bungy cord to tie the remote hydraulic lever in the UP/DOWN position.

JimB, If I engage the hydraulic lever forward to activate the system, it seems to "bog down" the tractor until I activate a valve on the tree spade. This is my first experience with a tree spade and not using a hydraulic system on a tractor other than to raise and lower a piece of farm machinery..disk, wagon, planter, etc...

Hi, the 574 will have an open center hydraulic system and your tree spade may have closed center hydraulic system.
Is there 2 hydraulic hoses connecting to the tree spade to the 574 hydraulic outlets?
The open center hydraulic system has to let the hydraulic oil flow in a loop in the idle state, from hydraulic pump thru the valves and back to the reservoir. When a valve is opened then the oil is diverted to the hydraulic cylinder.
The closed center system keeps a constant high pressure on the hydraulic line and no oil flows until a valve opens.

Google open center and closed center hydraulic systems.

JimB The tree spade has two hoses connecting to the 574. Would it be possible to switch the hoses, which I didn't do, and that correct the problem or doesn't that matter?....that would be too easy. You may be right about the open and closed systems.

Hi, you can try switching the hydraulic hoses but if it is open vs closed that will not fix the problem.
Make sure that the hydraulic quick-couplers are mating properly.

Possibly if you google the make/model of the hydraulic spool valves, you can determine if they are open or closed center.
Usually the only difference is the spool in the valve.

The open closed issue could be a possible problem. Though if you just get the power beyond like i posted earlier it will solve your issue. You said as long as the tractor valve was held to operat position it works. That is because your not flowing oil to your spade till you do that. That is what the power beyond plate does. It will allow flow to your spade to work while it is hooked up. What you are saying it does has nothing to do with the open or closed system valves on your spade.
