Farmall 400 Clutch Slipping

I have a 1955 Farmall 400 that I do a little farming with (10 acres)
If I get up against a load (like pulling a plow or if the disk bites in deep) the clutch will slip. I do not smell or hear anything although I don't let it slip very often or very much if it does start to slip.

Am I needing to replace the clutch disk? or do I also need the pressure plate and ect. I am getting ready to put a loader on the tractor and I want to get the clutch sorted out first.

Also, do I need to split the tractor to replace the clutch? I replaced the clutch in a Farmall M and I was able to go through the belly pump hole. I think splitting might be easier?, I have a loader to help and a friend has stands to hold the tractor up.

Thanks for any help and advice!

I would recommend splitting the tractor with stands. You will most likely need new clutch disk and pressure plate. Also replace throw out
bearing and flywheel pilot bearing. Not a bad idea to have flywheel surfaced at machine shop, and chech cond of flywheel ring gear. But first,
does clutch slip with ta lever both ways?

Does the clutch pedal have what my dad called "tow board clearance"? Does it have some free movement before it begins to engage?

Does your tractor have a TA? If it does, it might be the TA clutch slipping and not the engine clutch. To verify, pull the torque
back in a higher gear and see if you can get the engine clutch to slip.

Thanks for everyone's help, I figured I had to split it so that's no worries there.

I have never really used the TA on this tractor, I know it does work but I have heard it's really easy to mess them up so I just leave it along. The TA is always in high, I haven't pulled anything with it in low so I don't know if it slips or not?. The clutch doesn't slip very often, it's probably only slipped on me a few times. Once when the plow dug in too deep off the start and another time when I got into a mud hole I didn't know about with the disk.

Otherwise it pulls my 14' IH disk with weights on it like it's nothing.

Maybe the clutch is just needing adjusted? I need to do some work on the clutch pedal anyway, it has some slop in it because it's worn.
The tractor takes off right at the end of when I let out on the clutch. The pedal only pushes a couple inches before the clutch is disengaged and the tractor stops.

Thanks again for the help

The TA is to be used. Not using it wears the sprag clutch (continuous rotation against its locking surface with no force transmitting exercise) there should be a gap of
1.25 inches between the pedal arm and the platform cover measured at the point of contact before the pedal gets hard to push. (freeplay) the clutch will slip when there
is no freeplay. Jim

Thanks for the info, the clutch seems to be adjusted properly. Today I moved 6 bales of straw on a hay trailer, I put the TA in low and the transmission in 5th, I stopped on a slope and then took off to see if it would slip. The throttle was less then half and when I took off the tractor slowly moved and the engine barely pulled down. So now I do know the clutch does slip with the TA in high or low. So I am guessing the clutch is needing to be replaced?

Thanks again for the help

Yes, and with the amount of work involved to split the tractor, it makes no sense to "cheap out" and just replace some of the wear parts associated with the clutch, in the hopes that will fix the problem. More than likely you will end up splitting the tractor again to replace what you didn't the first time around.

Replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and flywheel pilot bearing at the bare minimum. Ideally you would also take the flywheel to a machine shop to have it resurfaced. It probably needs it with the clutch slipping so badly. This will make the new clutch last much longer and work much better.
