Speedi sleeve on worn differential shaft

I think I have a worn differential shaft on a ?43 A. I just replaced the differential and final drive seals. Now I am seeing oil leaks at the final drive so I tore it apart again. Noticed a little oil on what is supposed to be the dry side on both seals. I double checked that the seals were installed the correct direction. It leads me to believe that either the oil seals from another well known tractor parts website were faulty, or that the shaft itself is worn at both places it makes contact with the seals.

I can?t tell for certain if the shaft is truly worn. Nothing looks out of the ordinary. I?m thinking I might try a speedi sleeve that is supposed to fit with the oil seals. My question is if the shaft is not worn that bad with a speedi sleeve on, will it cause any problems with the performance of the seal?

Use a steel straight edge to bridge the seal location on the shaft. shine an LED or intense light behind the seal wear spot. If light is visible, it needs the sleeve. Jim

By that age take the percaution that the shaft is warn. Dirt and time will have warn the shaft. My thought as I was rebuilding the trasmition rearend of my late 46 farmall, if I was mechanicaly as old and seen as may hours and revilutions as a particular piece I wouod have a possibility to leak so put a ready sleeve on. When you get your new seals always see if the the seal is a double lip or single lip. On old stuff I always opt for double lip seals if they are available. If you have room for two seals I always install two. One example is the bull pinion seals on H thru 450 or so Farmalls. If you can get to the sealing surface you can buff the area with some really fine emery paper (1400 or finer). Next step is the speedi-sleave. They are expensive and in some cases pretty hard to install. Try on a axle that is 18" long with a $50 speedi-sleave. Took a little lovin' but it worked....
