Battery Disconnect and Generator

Hello,

If there is a battery disconnect, knife switch hooked up to the battery and each time the tractor is shut down the knife switch is disengaged, would you need to polarize the generator before each restart of the tractor?

No, polarizing should not be necessary every time unless there was an extraordinary amount of time between starts, like several years.

Red Dave is correct. The polarization is magnetism that is embedded in the iron of the field poles in the housing. Iron retains magnetism pretty well over time. The pulse of current used to polarize the field poles correctly just creates the North South orientation of the residual magnetic force. Each time the generator operates, that magnetism is renewed. The cut out relay in the voltage regulator disconnects the battery from the generator whenever the engine is turned off, or lowered engine rpm drops the generator charge level below that of the battery.

A disconnect switch would protect from battery drain, or possible fire hazzard. I would put disconnect switch on ground side of the battery.

A knife switch wouldn't be my first choice, but if you do use it, please make sure you put it in the ground side, not the hot side. That way accidental contact of the knife switch with something metal will not create a short.
