after cussing and fussing, i pulled a dist off a parts Super C C123 motor i had in the boneyard.. cleaned it up and replaced the points and condenser. while i was working on rebuilding the parts dist, Old, the tractor guru, called and we troubled shooted the system.

well, I put in the rebuilt dist and started testing the plugs. tractor fired on just #1, hooked #3, tractor tried to start. hooked up #4 tractor started on 3 cylinders. hooked up #2 Charlene started. had to adjust the timing just a little, motor smooth out and now runs real smooth.

after taking off the old dist, i found that i could not turn it by hand. gonna tare into it to see what the problem might be.

thanks for all the input and advice and thanks again to Kub6040 and Old.

Charlene, the 340 lives again.

I'll bet if you look real close at the gear on the bottom of that distributor you will find that the teeth are not as they should be. That is what happened to this 340 I have a couple years ago. It was running just fine then would not start one day and I found the distributor would turn when it wanted to and not other times so was hard to find the problem because it would turn when I would look but not when I had the cap on and could not see the rotor

Were any of the screws that held the points or condenser replaced with longer screws? I saw that one time(due to A lost screw),and the distributor would not turn.Mark.

I did that years ago on a Wisconsin VF4D. Lost a screw, and replaced with one too long. Stripped teeth off gear on bottom of distributor.

I changed points and condensor in SMTA distributor once, wouldn't start. I had changed location of screws as mentioned below and one is longer than the other. On mine it broke the pin holding the distributor gear so distributor was not turning
