Farmall A steering box leaking

I am at a loss on this one.

After rebuilding the steering box on my ‘39 A it is weeping oil along the gasket as well as the sector shaft seal where the housing and seal meet. I used a gear oil rated RTV in addition to the gasket and seal provided in the rebuild kit. Followed the instructions for set up, torquing and curing before adding 90wt gear oil.

90wt it what the owners manual reccomends, should I try a heavier weight? I’ve had the steering box apart twice and it leaks less the second time. I’m at the point of draining the oil and just filling the box with grease. Any thoughts on that? Even if there was some distorsion in the mating surfaces, the RTV should have taken up that gap.

Sounds like you have done things right. Can be frustrating.
I have been using JD Corn Head grease in my Farmall gear boxes. Much more liquid when moved around by the gearing than gun grease is.
JD web site has a video on how it works.

Yes the housing had been cracked, and DEFINITELY didn’t have to loot hard to see it. I had the crack brazed inside and out by a local machine shop. The leak doesn’t appear to be coming from the repair, but I could he wrong.

Will look into the corn head grease for sure. Thanks

I blended up my own grease with a 50-50 mix of wheel bearing grease and 90 wt. In a coffee can with a coat hanger and my drill, Make it as thick as you want. I use in my steering box on Farmall, not a leak so far, after several years. I made it pretty thick, was just barely able to pour it in, it was so thick.

I just wanted to mention that I had one leak on my C and I thought that I may have caused it by replacing the vented plug with an unvented
plug. Gearbox can build alot of pressure if unvented. I'm not sure if the A uses a vented fill plug.
