Well I bought the 464 IH gas tractor, I bought all of the service, & parts manual, & operator's manual from binder nnalert There is very little information about what distributor that is in it. no picture's that I can find of location of the timing / degree marks on the crankshaft. or pointer it has the IH C-175 engine, Thanks Dave F.

I bought a 1964 gasser in 1979. My second tractor. What I would do, without a manual and a picture....like in an I and T which are available at dealers and TSC: look on the front of the crankshaft for a wheel with a flat surface, counter balance wheel possibly, and look around the circumference for a line scribed in it....may need to remove some paint to find it.

Pull the spark plug on #1, stick a wire in the hole and roll the engine till the piston is at TDC. Go to the mark and look around for anything that is close to lining up with it including marks on the engine block casting. If that fails, roll it through to get the piston back up at TDC again and check the proximity to the line again.

If No mark is found, roll back to one of the TDC positions and make your own mark on the engine block. That will give you a place to start. Set up the timing for that mark (turning the distributor and checking the point opening) and go from there.

On where to set, when I don't know, I rotate the dist. till it hits and continue till it runs then CCW till it coughs, then CW till it coughs, and set it in the middle of those positions.
