The tractor seems to want to fire has good spark at first but I was checking it grounding a plug to the frame and the spark seems to only last a few turns. Will not run on ether and is getting gas. Coil? Resistor?
Thanks!

Ifthe points seem Ok or it doesn't help to clean them, It coild be a faulty coil. When they die, they often act that way. Jim

If 12 volt, perhaps bad resistor or resistance wire that allows 12 volt to feed to a 6 volt coil when starting.

When I have an iffy problem like your having I hot wire it. Run a wire from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil and see if it will start. If it starts and runs then the problem is from the coil back to the battery. If you still do not have spark the problem is in the distributor

those tractors had a wire from the starter selinoid that bypassed the resistor to give the coil 12 volts for easier starting . after the starter button
is released the current was reduced to 6 volts. with the key on a test light should be dim at the coil . another thing to check isthe timeing no one
greases the gears in the distributor drive and the gears wear and start skipping
