656 brake shims

I'm replacing the brakes on my 656. It has four shims now making the discs too tight. With new discs, how many shims, or thereabouts, will I need. I know, every tractor could be different but there must be a number of shims to get you in the ballpark with new discs. Parts catalog calls for 20, 10 per side. I think that's a bit much.

Thanks for your response.

Bolt the drum tight without the cover . Then with lay a straight edge across the lining and measure gap to drum. Give yourself a little extra though. Also, if you did not have the drum off completely, beware that dirt gets in behind that drum when all loosened up and will cause problems. No matter how good you clean around the drum, it just seems to get in there when bolts are loosened.

There's a seal on the trunnion shaft coming from the transmission housing that the brake discs mount to. The drum mounts up flush
to the transmission housing. You're right, no seal on the cover.

Seal is in the drum so it can be damaged when removing drum. Your call on need to replace or not. Flat lip on seal would indicate worn seal.

Pete, went out an measured the clearance as you suggested. I'm going to need more shims than I thought and may need up to 10 on each side as the parts catalog suggests. At $16 each, was hoping to get by with just a few extra.

I always had a bunch of all different kinds of shims that I had removed or had left over from various jobs at the dealership when I worked there. Maybe a shop near you would have some laying around or a salvage yard. About 10 years ago, I ransacked a local salvage yard for a bunch on a 656 I was working on.
