Just watched this sell at auction. 1970
856 gas. Barn stored but has not ran in
many years. Seemed original and not all
cobbled up. $2750

Wish we had some idea how many hours on it. Bet the rear tires are factory original. Probably wouldn't take much to get it running. Some idea when it last ran would help predict how long it would take to get it running. Would be a gas burning son of a gun but that was my favorite IH cab until the 86-series. I bet there's some weights for it on a hayrack or in a pile next to it. Bet it would have brought $3000 if they washed all the dust off.

That 856 with the cab and widefront end would make an excellent winter time chore tractor. With a loader and maybe a 3 point blade, you could clear the snow from the driveway in COMFORT. $2,500 for an 856, even a gasser, makes a whole lot more sense than $1,500 for a Farmall M, and probably would not use any more gas than the M.

I bought an 806 gas at a consignment auction. Didn't look too bad, could tell it had set inside for a while. Got it home and would not run, backfired a couple times. Finally pulled the head and valves were burned out. Guess they had ran it until it wouldn't run anymore. Overhauled it and is my loader tractor.

(quoted from post at 12:52:23 03/18/18) Boy, I don't know. We had a 560 gasser that burned an
unbelievable amount of gas.

Nebraska test doesn't look too bad for a gasser... 12.2 hp-hr per gallon is down right respectable for a gasser of that era!

Depends on what job you were doing with it. We had a John Deere 4010 gas. When pulling a plow, you'd better be heading for the gas barrel at noon. Raking hay, you could go for about 3 days on a tank of gas.
