Year of MD engine

i found an MD with engine serial number FDBK 19091. Can someone tell me what year this engine is and what size it was originally? Also I
would like to use this engine as a donor for my 400D. Can this be done? Thanks in advance.

Look at the casting date code on the engine. It will read month, day, letter. Post back with results,we can tell what year from that. It will be 248 cubic inches. Yes,it will fit,but will be a bit 'underpowered'(not that you will ever notice).400 is 264 ci.

1952, 248 CI original, may be rebuilt to 264 CI. Can be installed in a 400. Depending on 400 serial or changes since new the fuel lines to pump and fuel filter base may be be different and injection pumps may be a different type. Nothing that can't be overcome. If using the distributor may want to change intake manifold to type that powers the coil and cuts power when fuels are switched. 400 D hydraulic pump will fit that engine.

Why would you want to put the effort into something not correct?

400 diesels can be bought pretty right can get a good one for 2-3000 that is correct and has correct engine and casting codes

Just sounds like a lot of work to have a cobbled up tractor

Is having a running driving tractor instead of two derelict tractors headed for the scrapyard a good enough reason?

You've got a tractor with a bad engine. You've got a good engine that will fit in that tractor. Let's just send it all to scrap because it's not "correct." Yeah, makes great sense...

Barnyard,

No one said that at all. Why part the md out also if saveavme
ever think of that. 400 diesels are fairly common and not hard
to find a good one all was saying.

First of all thanks to those who gracefully answered my question. That is what I am accustomed to on this forum. I can proceed with confidence. Now for the purist question. If I was successful attaching my photo you will see a portion of my collection all of which are as original as can be restored to. Most of them are our family tractors from the beginning. So the MD I am considering as a donor does not have it's original engine but only has 30 hours on a complete overhaul. My daughter fell in love with the 400D we have and would like to have it for her own. It also was completely restored but the engine and block are junk. I am a purist at heart but also a realist. So the decision becomes spend a couple thousand on a donor or 5 - 8 on a rebuild. Or no tractor for my daughter.

Get on Facebook, there are always people selling alot of good stuff on there. Should be able to buy a 400d engine, don't make much sense to put a small engine in a tractor then what it originally came with... there are some very good and reasonable sources for parts for gas start diesels.
