The engine serial number is just below the head on the front right side of the block. On the H the chassis serial number and the engine serial number should match.
 
If you don't see the number look for the long tin cover on spark plug side of block. Then notice where the vent tube comes out of the cover it will have a bulge in cover. Right above the cover will be a raised flat spot down below the third spark plug from front of tractor. Had H tractors with engine serial number there and still have one with the number located there. Engine serial number will be the same year as tractor serial number lists for most originals unless a mess up happened or a early block failure.

This block has the flat spot below the number one spark plug like was posted. Some blocks have them at front with no flat on back and some have flat on back with none at front and some have a flat both places.
