300 Utility, another TA , clutch, shifting question

So I have read as many posts as I can regarding a 300U, Clutch adjustment, and IH TA and cannot seem to narrow this down.

I bought a 300U a few months ago, has a front loader and intend to use it to move some dirt around the property. Had a multitude of issues but the one I can not seem to get a grip on is the difficulty in removing from gear. When on flat ground the tractor shifts in and out of gear fine. When you have forward or rearward pressure the shifter will not come out of gear.

I have read (and do not fully understand) that the TA and the clutch are working together and in effect are hold the tractor in position when the clutch is push down. I have also read that the main clutch can be disengaged and the TA not disengaging will hold pressure not allowing the shifter to be moved.

I have done the TA adjustment and it does not work meaning that it is not going into low. The tractor still moves forward and holds pressure with the TA handle in low so I am not sure it is "gone" but it is not working currently (no change in ground speed). I adjusted it according to the manual and then again after reading the posts about adjusting after the unit has some wear on it.

I have adjusted the main clutch and while it is nearly out adjustment it does disengage the clutch and function normally.

I removed the view window from above the TA and when the handle is thrown I can see the throw out bearing and clutch unit moving rearward but it does not appear to be releasing, almost like the ta clutch disc is stuck to the TA body.

Is there a way to adjust or disengage the TA, for my purposes it does not have to work. I am only really interested in getting the unit to shift easier when I have forward or rearward pressure. The TA is a nice feature but not something that is required for my purposes.

Thank you,
Brian

Since you have the panel open, does the pressure plate seem to come away from the clutch disk? If so the TA clutch disk is indeed probably stuck to the TA unit. All you should need to do is gently persuade the disk to release from the TA. I can't advocate shoving a screwdriver in there and prying, but that may be what you need to do.

If the pressure plate is not pulling away from the TA clutch disk, then either the linkages need more adjustment, or the TA pressure plate fingers are worn off or the TA throwout bearing is shot.

Wear in the linkages means that adjusting "by the book" on the old mechanical TA does not always work. Sometimes you need to adjust the linkages a little past the book values until things work.

I was thinking that previously so when I did the second adjustment to the TA I then took the cover off. When I pull the handle back the TA is barely nicking the plate hole opening so I I dont think I should or can go much further.

When I pull the lever I can see the throw out bearing move rearward and then entire TA shift rear word. Not being completely competent in this I had the expectation that the TA would "open" and release pressure from the disc.

OK so let's try this once again , FIRST unhook all the linkage going to the T/A clutch arm , that's the back one behind the bell houseing . NoW SET THE CLUTCH FREE TRAVEL> BY FEEL and also getting down under the tractor with a flash light/ trouble light what ever and make sure that you still have about a 1/8th -1/4 inch between the throw out bearing and clutch fingers . Now that you have say around and 7/8th of and inch free travel on the MAIN CLUTCH pedal your done there . Next remove the cover / over top of the T/A clutch (your already there ) NOw move the arm that goes to the T/A throw out bearing and see how it moves and look everything over in there and pplay touchy feely makeing sure that the throw out bearing moves freely and does not sound like a walnut grinder grinding shells and all. Now look at the three fingers on the T/A pressure plate , Are they in good shape not burnt blued or missing any pins causing then to flop around . , Next take a pry bar / long screw driver and see if the T/A flywheel will move forward or back , IF you have movement here Huston you have a problem . If it is solid with vary little movement the on to the next step , whith this step you have to have the T/A return spring unhooked if it is still there , that is the spring that goes from the main clutch bell crank to the T/A bell crank . Now make sure the T/A lever is forward possession UN hooked is better , Now move the T/A throw out bearing so the T/A throw out bearing is just a whisker away from the T/A clutch fingers and now adjust the linkage between the main clutch bell crank to the T/A bell crank and install the headed pins and see how much slop you have , NOW take out About HALF your slop in the pins . Buying new head/ clevis pins helps remove SOME of the slop . Now on to adjusting the T/A lever with this read the book here and set sorta close allowing for excessive FEILD testing over the years. NOW rehook the return spring . And test . When you have it correct it will not matter if your on a hill forward or backwards when you depress the clutch peday you should slide out of get with ease .

I will add to the Vet's fine info, that the adjustment of the foot clutch free play must be made at an inch or 7/8. If it cannot be
adjusted to that spec, the TA clutch may not function as intended. The TA flywheel (where the TA clutch is located) moving
rearward also bothers me. It should be near no movement. Jim

I appreciate it fellas, I will not be able to get to this until the weekend due to the work schedule but when I do I intend to take some photos, possibly a video to help the situation.

Thank you.

So I had some time as it was the weekend, I took the directions from the "Vet" and worked forward. So here is what I found. I adjusted the clutch (plate removed), and then set the pedal free play. I then did an extended examination of the TA clutch and throw out bearing. The bearing spins freely but does seem a little "loose" on the shaft as it is thrown against the clutch fingers. None of clutch fingers were ate up, however one of them was missing a pin. So I measure and made a pin in the lathe and put it in and tired her out. After all the messing around and turning the TA clutch manually with a screw driver the clutch appears to have come free. I can clearly see the plate releasing from the disc, about a 32nd or so. While doing all of this I did see that the TA clutch unit does move a little on the shaft, 1/8 in or so. It does not move freely back and forth but with a screw driver you can move it. I then took it out for test run and unfortunately while it does feel better the TA does not work meaning there is no change in ground speed when lever is pulled rear ward, but the bigger disappointment is that it still is stuck in gear when on an incline.

The part that I do not understand about the mechanics is operation meaning that when on an incline and you clutch the tractor it is if the brakes are applied. If you can manage to hit the right spot and pull it out of gear it will free wheel which is fine as a I have brakes.

Any additional advise?
