on the parts diagram, shows spring as no.42,,but there is two 42"s part number....which one is the spring the ten dollar one or the 30 dollar
one...what is w/ opitional 49407DBX or is it 357012R1.........thanks in advance......dewy

The two spring numbers were interchangeable. Both numbers would work. Probably two different suppliers was the reason for two numbers.

Thought I better check my answer out. If your spring has a hook on each end the 357012R1 is what you want. Dawned on me with the other number ending in DBX that must be the spring with a yoke and pin at rear. Didn't think that one should even be used on a 300 since early tractors was all I noticed that type spring on. What do you mean by loose? May be meaning something a new spring won't cure.

Loose in idle positon would be normal. If engine runs up to full rpm's with the normal settings of the governor stop screws.

may try to put some bushings in the holes where spring hooks like you did on your gov in the archives...an re adjust gov...throttle response is not where it should be.....thanks dewy

thanks pete ,ordered new spring just so i know its good and tight an not weak from age.....dewy

IF your spring flops around in BIG hole in both arms it is because the org bushings have fallen out of the Gov . arms Originally there were hardend bushings that were pressed in the two arms inside the gov. that the spring hooked to and like MOST of the old governors those bushing have fallen out and are long gone. Like most for years i just thought that that hug holes were the way they were made . Then one day i was working on a super nice old M that had a gov spring break and when i opened it up the two arms had hardened steel bushings still inplace The hole is a little bigger then the wire dia. of the spring and both sides of the buchings are chamfered to allow for the curve in the spring hook . Since i found that when ever i work on any of the old H-M-300-450'i make up BRONZEN bushings and press them in and do a readjustment to the whole throttle system . YOU can not believe how much better they will run
