Farmall super m axle seals

So I?m planning on changing the real axle seals on my farmall super m. I was wonder how big of a job it was and also if it?s difficult? Anybody have experience with is? Any tips or steps people reccomened? Thanks

Hard part is getting the hubs off the axels. I did my M with the wheels attached to the hub but its awkward and they are heavy, especially if they are loaded. Maybe some one else has a better way of doing it.

You have done the hard part already. What I do is go to an office supply store and buy thin plastic sheet protectors for typing paper. The thinner the better. Clean the axles as best you can. Draw a file across them to knock off any burrs. Wrap a single layer of the sheet protector around the axle. Tape it on with some scotch tape. Grease the seal and the sheet protector. Now slide the seal over the axle and the sheet protector. Slide the seal and the seal housing all the way home. You may have to finesse it a bit. This works very well for me, I use it for every axle seal replacement. It takes a little more time, but I have never had an axle seal leak after using this method.

We just cleaned the snot out of the axles and rubbed a bunch of grease on them. It doesn't leak yet and that was 14? years ago.

I really appreciate all the responses. But I don?t see anything in my service manual about axle seals. So after I take off the wheels what do I do? What do I take off and what do I pull out..I saw a video of a guy that pulled the whole axle and everything off of the transmission housing? But also there?s the axle seal houses that?s held on by a few bolts correct?in all the years having farmall a never changed out an axle seals

Don't forget there's a gasket between the seal holder cap and the axle carrier. Three new parts per side.

The seal retainers are bolted to the ends of the axle housings. There are four bolts that hold them on. That holds the grease seal and the felt dust ring that has been mentioned. You DO NOT need to remove the axle or the axle housing! If you are going to use the M for real work, I would replace the felt dust rings. They should be available from this site. Same for the axle seals.

I have done it on both my Farmall 340 (somewhat the size of a Farmall M) and my Farmall Super C. Not a big task, but just be careful removing the wheels from the axle. The advice you got on protecting the seals when sliding them on it is good, as well replacing the dust covers. Now sometimes there can be a grove in the axle resulting in the seal continuing to leak. I will let others comment on what has worked for them in that situation. Good Luck.
