Cummins into a 756

New here but not to YT. A friend is putting a Cummings 5.9 out of a Dodge pickup into a 756 German Diesel. His question is? What or where do you do with the cooling fan? Thinking there might be some information here? Thanks in advance

Have you ever heard the term of BARN YARD ENGINEERING , This is where your friend is at . I have done a 3.9 and two 5.9's and 1 8.3 BUT they were installed in Oil -all-overs and they were some what easy , but by no means and instant drop in . Now let this sink in by the time your done and even if it is a butcher job and not a clean well thought out swap the money you spent you could have just rebuilt what you had totally and got off cheaper . If you want or need more pony power then get a bigger tractor that has more power . Last Cummins swap we did was the 8.3 into a Oliver 2150 , you ask why we went with the 8.3 instead of the 5.9 . Well to pull the equal Hp. out of the 5.9 as the org 478 Herc. made we would have been way past the max Hp. for industrial ap of the 5.9 and working it would have caused problems down the road . By going the 8.3 we are now at 505 cubes and even with setting the pump for around 220-225 Hp we are well UNDER max industrail ap load . So engine life will last longer . Cost to do this swap was 3250 bucks for the engine , 1000 bucks for the flywheel ,175 dollars for the starter 65 dollars for a Special hose from Cummins and all the othe misc came to around 5500 bucks . Cost to do a total rebuild on the Herc was going to run over 6 grand .

I would shop for a nice D360 tractor engine. Would be a lot cheaper and simpler. The 360 came in the 766 so it would be close to a bolt in. With the Cummins swap, you will need to convert the engine from truck gov. to Ag gov. along with a lot of other parts and fabricating.

You rang?

Leaman Bros sells a conversion kit to get a Cummins 3.9 or 5.9 mounted in between the rails. There are still quite a few questions left unanswered, but there is enough experience with putting Cummins engines in large frame IH tractors out there. Quite a bit of info in a google search for "806 Cummins" that applies to the 756.

I agree with the others. Fix the 'old' 310. By the time you buy all the known parts(and all the unknown'surprises'),and the labor(much more so if you hire out any labor)You are going to have way more money than just fixing the 310.In my experience, all "conversions" cost way more.More than the estimate, more than the cost of fixing what is there.Even if the old engine is "not fixable".So unless you have deep pockets, and just want to do it for giggles,go for it. Otherwise, fix the 310.

OIL -ALL_OVERS are easy to do the Cummins swap . A type two S A E engine plate and a flywheel off one of them newer Olivers and your 90 % there .

There aren't any good rebuild kits for the German diesels anymore. If there are you tell me where. AFAIK, Reliance is the only one that still says they have a kit, and their stuff is garbage.

A D360 truck engine is as much of a challenge to fit as a Cummins, plus they're a lot harder to find. Old rusted out Dodges with 12-valves all over the place. Not many early '80s DOT crew trucks or short buses left anymore.

Rear plate you can get from any diesel 66 series. 3XX and 4XX engines are the same. Front cover from a large frame must be milled down to fit the narrower smaller frame rails of the 56 seires. The only one that fits direct is off a 666 diesel. Good luck finding one of those.

Thanks fellas for all the interesting posts. I'll be passing this information along to him.
