Series names?

So I get the letter series, and you have the 06, 56, 66, 86, etc... Are there general period names for other styling periods? I have both a 240 and 460 which clearly are in the same style but IDK what to call them. Is there a good book to have in the library that sorta covers the history and reasoning or thought behind some of the numbering sequences?

I don't think there's any official account of the reasoning behind the number series. IMHO, it was mostly a matter of what "rolled off the tongue" best.

After the 30/50 series, the 4 and 6 in the model numbers clearly denoted the number of cylinders in the engine. 504, 686 1468.

When you got into the 1980's, it seems like it got to be more of a "who's got the biggest number in their model" contest between the brands. Then they ran out of numbers, so they started using letters combined with numbers.

I don't know about anyone else, but I personally refer to all the 40 and 60 tractors collectively as the "sixty series." I also consider the 404 and 504 a part of the "oh-six series." The 1468 and 1568 would be part of the "sixty-six series." All due to the shared styling.

Not sure on names for the series, but style (to me) can be loosely broken down basically as follows

unstyled or basics style with the F series,10/20.....

stream lined letter
vertical slot grill for the 100's
...50's went white grill

next was styled square(more rounded, 40/60's)
Then basic flat/square (more flat straight lines,06/56)
After that the boxy grill. (66/86)
then smooth slanted (no more "ridge" down center of hood, flat side sheet metal...88 series)
