1946 H with 6 volt

I need to replace the 6v battery on my 1946 H. Don't want to get something cheap that won't last but don't want to overspend either. The battery from Advance Auto that I looked at is rated 640CCA and 800CA. It's an Autocraft.

Price is $63.46 with the old battery. That's a 25% discount by ordering online and I can pick it up a mile from the house.

battery online? how much is freight? will it eat up the discount? What happens if the battery fails?Buy local.I have good luck with Interstate.Other brands have been just as good.

Oh how I wish we had your prices here. A 6 volt battery for my Farmall M costs about $185 here and I have to drive a good way to get it. The high cost of parts in Australia is savage. I asked for a price on IH mower guards two years ago. Available in the U.S. at under $10 each and available here at $104.50 + 10% GST each. There are twenty seven on my mower; did not purchase them here.

I got mine from NAPA. It was a 900 CCA battery and cost $115 in April 2014. It is been a good one and so far is still working.

Ever think of converting it to 12 volt? Wouldn't cost a whole lot more and would be a big improvement in cranking speed. IMO

I vote the 12 volt conversion just for the convenience of parts and price. Yup the batteries are about the same price and getting harder to find each year.

Like Delta says, find out about warranty claims. You might be able to pick it up a mile from your house, but can you take it back there if a problem arises. I'm not sure what size an H takes, but a group 1 6V battery from Advance for my Super C was about $80. I must have gotten a ringer, because this battery is about 6 years old and still cranking. I'm telling this great big long story just to say that it's better to be able to go into a store and grab someone by the neck ( after more diplomatic avenues, of course) as opposed to trying to track down some nameless, faceless person online, even if you have to pay a little more.

I agree with 12 volt conversion. A common Delco 10SI alternator has been made to fit an H, or a Hitachi alternator from a late 70, early 80's Datsun/Nissan is a smaller case and has been used a number of times. The 3 wire versions are not difficult to wire.

Spend the bucks for a 6 volt battery now, then the generator or regulator goes south and you are stuck. Either a replacement 6 volt regulator (if you can find one that works) or generator overhaul will exceed the price of an alternator.

With 12 volt negative ground alternator you will have greater reliability and be compatible with modern vehicles and less confusing if it ever comes to a jump start.

12 volt battery now should be in same price range as 6 volt.

Farmall H tractors crank pretty decent on six volts if you have good heavy cables and good e an ground connections. I don't see the point in converting to 12 volts.

I looked at 6 volts batteries the other day at Orschelns. $84.99

fritz maurer, yes you'll be able to return it if there's a problem, you do it online to get a better price and for convenience, plus they'll have it by the register by the time you go there to pick it up, every thing else is the same like going into the store and buying it off the shelf, this is not the dark ages
