farmall 706d ta

Do not used that TA for a brake just use it under hard pull do not use at the end of the field to slow down only under a load it last longer

*IF* the TA was installed properly. It has hold-back clutches on the low range that, if the TA was not installed properly and pressures not set correctly, won't hold the tractor back.

In other words, it's SUPPOSED to hold you back, but may not. There is no way to tell without using it for a while.

Now as far as using the TA, you're going to get a whole bunch of mainly conflicting advice on this.

The 706 has a hydraulic TA so leaving it in direct and having it last forever like a mechanical TA does not work. Also unlike a mechanical TA, it was not designed just to be used "only during a hard pull."

Use it to match your speed to work conditions. If you're baling and need to slow down where the windrow gets heavy, pull the TA lever. When you get to the end of the field and want to slow down to make the turn, pull the TA.

It's going to wear out whether you use it or not, and in fact should last longer if you DO use it, you may as well use it. By using it, you're splitting the wear between the low side and the high side, and the low side sprag clutch is not always overrunning and wearing itself out.

One thing I do agree with is do NOT use the TA as a "jake brake." Some people will tell you that's fine too, and I encourage you to try it once, but if that sound it makes when you do it bothers you like it bothers me, you probably won't do it again. Downshift the TA only when you're not being "pushed." Upshifting the TA while being "pushed" is perfectly fine.
