IH584 started running oddly

I was USING IT TODAY AND HAD BEEN RUNNING IT FOR COUPLE HOURS WHEN ALL AT ONCE IT STARTED TO RUN POORLY AND SURGED the RPM and some times putting out some smoke. I thought maybe low on fuel but I checked and it still has a round a half tank. I did shut it down for a few minutes while I went and parked the 65 Ford 1 ton dump truck. Been using the 584 in the creek to load gravel to fix a big car eating mud hole in my driveway. I have some fuel additive so I went ahead and added some just in case it was water or such. I'm thinking maybe fuel filters?? I have not changed the filter since I had owned it and as for diesels I do not work on them much. Not even sure how to change them and them bleed the air in the system.

Also any body know the filter numbers?? I figure if I can get out I should replace them and also get some more fuel since it is down to half a tank

Thanks

I can't remember for sure but did you check the gauge or look under the cap? The transfer pipe on those fuel tanks can plug up and it will have half a tank in one side and be empty in the other. Just a thought. Sam

Hi Old, as tractorsam said and fuel filters and junk in the bottom of fuel tank restricting the fuel flow out of the tank.
All the above cause the surging and the black smoke. When the fuel flow is inadequate the governor in the IP will go WOT and cause the surging and black smoke.
If you remove the fuel line at the input of the first filter the fuel should flow at the full of the pipe. If it is junk in the bottom of the tank blowing back in this line with compressed air will provide a temporary fix.

those tractors have a saddle tank and some times the line gets plugged so it looks like the the tank is half full. there are 3 different filters used on those tractors . if you have 2 glass bowls then its the cav style filters IH part number 3044506R93. if you have 1 spin on and one cartridge you have a bosch system the spin on is 3218794R1 and the bosch cartridge is3218794R1 and lastly there was a kit to change the the bosch cartridge to a spin on i dont know the kit number. the bleed screws are on the top of the filter housings .

If you happened to have algae in the fuel (can happen if tractor sits awhile) and you added biocide or such, you'll have to change filters often. My 585 will lose power and act like it is about to die. I'll limp it to the shop and change filters. I keep a pair from AutoZone or such. If I remember to fill the new filters with fuel before I screw them on, very little bleeding is necessary at top of filter housings and the tractor will fire right off. Once I forgot to fill the filters, bleed forever and it was still slow to restart.

This tractor burnt last summer and was given to me. So no gauge there is not even a dash. I pulled the cap off and use a stick to gauge how full it is.

This 584 has 2 spin on filters. If I read them right one is a Wix 33472 and has a bleed/drain on the bottom of it and the other filter is a 33372 or 33373. The loader frame makes it hard to see the filters and I bet will also make changing them a bit of a pain. I know this the filters are not cheap. Checked with my local O'Reilly's and if it was not for having an account with them they would be $25 each but with my account there that for both of them

Just change fuel filters don?t complain about price of fuel filters I don?t were you live it could of jelled up it might have Algae I have a buddy that has new case skid loader his filters jell up and cost $90 and you are a Comeplaing about the price of filters I still like to see this tractor you better hope you didn?t hurt the injection pump can?t believe you didn?t change all the filters and fluids

Change fuel filters and check the crossover line at the bottom of the tank.

The filler is on the left side and the engine pulls fuel from the right. It is possible to have "1/2 a tank" since you dip the left side, if the transfer hose is plugged the tractor will drain the right side until it's empty.

Adding to what others have said, the draw fitting on the bottom right could be stopped up and not let fuel pass to the filters.Pull a drain plug on the bottom of second filter and check for good flow.I would let about a gallon flow out because you also are draining the filters. To bleed them, simply install them DRY,and open the bleeder on top of the filter housing, and they will gravity bleed out the air.The fuller the tank, the easier, quicker, they will bleed. Mark.

Well I do not fix things that are not broken and so I have not changed fluids but I did fix what I did find broken. I do also see where if the tank is full or close the right side also fills from the top left side and if the cross over pipe is clogged up I can see where a half tank could be a problem. It has been in the 60s here so no chance it has jelled the fuel

I'm thinking is that since the tank has a cross over on the bottom but also the way the tank is made it also crosses over on top if the tank is full enough. My plan is to change the filters and also fill the tank up and go from there

i usually take the loader off and i have loosened up the bolts on the front of the loader frame and taken the bolts out of the rear and swung the frame out and set it on a jack stand or a 5 gallon pail. i got a strap wrench that goes on a half in. drive ratchet that works well for that job. i checked messicks filter prices and they want $20.oo per filter. if you take out the sending unit on the fuel tank you can look down in the tank . i had to do that on an 895 once to get all the crud out. the first time you do a job is always the hardest after that it gets easier.
