450D front wheel spindle/nut

Can anybody identify this 'extension' on my 450 narrow front? It is on both sides and is stationary relative to the wheel. Been banging my shins on them for years. I assume they are for a mounted implement but what that might be escapes me.

They are not long for this world. I'll be putting a WFE on this tractor soon.

Is it simply a matter of removing lugs and installing new caps?

Neighbors had a rusty old 2M picker they put on a similarly rusty MD every fall, I "think" it might have had a steerable center snoot too.

About 1965-'66 Dad found a 2M-H picker sitting in the back lot of a different IH dealer being parted-out, he bought the center snoot off that picker plus the full coverage steel stalk deflectors to replace the wood slats that always loosened and caught a lug on a rear tire and broke. Only took a couple hours to install everything. The whole stalk deflector lifted off for greasing. About that same time Dad got the M&W Super-Snoot to replace the grill that always plugged up causing over-heating when picking.

Trash, leaves, husks, etc. always accumulated under the gas tank on the picker tractor. The battery box on the '51 M was replaced with the battery box seat base from a stage II Super M, belt pulley gearbox was removed and the factory plate installed. The Corn Picker Package was installed years before, was a steel sediment bowl to replace the glass that broke and flooded the tractor fire with raw gas, and a pre-screener to replace the air cleaner inlet cap or cap with the fruit jar. After all those changes the torque tube pretty well shed any trash that built up under the gas tank, but one year the tractor DID catch fire picking about 30-40 rows from the big concrete water tank in the center of our farm. The fire was about out by the time Dad got to the water tank, Wasn't a bucket anywhere around that would hold water, but Dad fired off both 2-1/2# fire extinguishers and eventually the fire died.

Dad had a 2M or 2MH on a 400. We made side shields (solid) for the sides of the engine. Had to be careful because on a warm day the gas would get to boiling in the fuel tank
