Would have bet $100 - 656 Inquiry

I've inquired about a problem with my 656 on here before. The problem is that the hydraulic line coming from the pump has a high pitch whine and vibrates. Recommendation was to change the trans/hydraulic oil. The oil looked fine and was not milky but changed it anyway with Hy-Tran. The whine and vibration is gone which I would have bet $100 it wouldn't be. Oh, and BTW....$230 bill to change the Hy-Tran.

Simply, I don't know. Bought the tractor from an older gentlemen neighbor that purchased the tractor new in 1970. I did see TSC hydraulic oil in his shop. I asked if he had ever changed the trans oil which he told me no. The tractor at almost 50 yrs old, that was the last straw for me to go ahead and do it.

I really don't get it. How can "wrong oil" cause something like that? The tractor isn't "alive," can't "taste," and as such cannot tell the difference between one wet slippery liquid and another wet slippery liquid. You could use extra virgin olive oil in the hydraulics and the tractor would not be able to tell the difference.

More likely the simple act of changing the oil flushed some chunk of gunk out of wherever it was causing the problem. If it didn't come out the drain hole, beware that it might get sucked up to cause trouble again in the future.

Viscosity, and friction additives can change the way oil is regulated through the pilot orifice in the safety and regulator valve. If wrong or old, it can chatter, or go on demand when it is not intended. Jim
