IH 656 shift linkage

Have linkage apart, nothing in IT Manual about assembly. I did not find anything broken, has round dowel pin, was still tight. Problem was shift lever would not move far enough to get into 1st and reverse.

With that shift linkage just like all of the newer I H linage problems are due to excessive FIELD TESTING . so all slop has to be removed as a little here and a little there amount to a HUGe amount of slop and then it is i can't find the gear. Dirt build up around linkage hamper shifting . I have worked on maybe eight or 9 656-666-686 shifters over the years and another thing that speeds up ware on them is the T/A linkage being out of adjustment , when that get out then the tugging and jerking start and this adds to ware.

These shifters are a bugger to work on cause you can not realy see up under what you want to see. Go to IH Parts book to get an idea what you are up against.
