Farmall 656 Park Brake keeps popping out

I will have to look at a fix for our 656 (~1968) where the ONLY problem seems to be with the park brake.
Every now and then it will simply pop out. Haven't properly looked at it yet, but have sharpened (ground off) the bar that engages the teeth. Didn't improve it though.

I am wondering if this is a common problem with a recommended fix, or if it needs to be addressed and a new solution found.

I'd hate to put the post rammer on the new Kubota, and would much prefer it on the 656, but with this "flakey" parking brake it becomes quite dangerous.

Any help appreciated....

By the way, it's a gas engine, gear drive (not hydro) version, in case that makes a difference.

Never heard of it on a 656. Be sure brake free travel is not over 4 inches, linkage is not bent and properly installed as they have a habit of getting put back together out of wack so to speak. Usually hard to unlock not keep locked due to upper spring not working properly.

Thanks for the fast reply.

It all looks correct. I'd describe it as WORN though. Worn out?
I am assuming it can't be purchased these days as after market items?
Maybe I have to pull it all apart and rebuild it. Not looking forward to that, but it is preventing me using the 656 sometimes.

Aye.
Looks like the issue is that the pawl pops out of the ratchet.
Maybe I can remove the ratchet and hand file the 'teeth' so as to make the pawl engage and secure properly.

Sharpening the Pawl, and filing the serrations in the ratchet will do it. They should be undercut so the pawl stays put. Jim

Great. I will try that and report back once complete.
Thanks!

Just a quick update: It's fixed!

Filing was not an option, as the metal is way too hard and the serrations terminate in a bend on one end, so can't really be successfully modified by filing.

I did buy a cheap Dremel at HomeDepot and bought Solid Carbide Rotary Burrs of Amazon (the set for about $12).
This worked EXTREMELY well. It's now slightly undercut, and secure.

Thanks again for who replied.
