Converting a Super C to 12 volt. Is the 6 volt starter allright to use? Do they even make a 12 volt starter for a C? Thanks

A 6v starter will last almost forever with 12 volts cranking it. What will kill it is when your ignition systems does not get the required attention and you overuse the starter to get the tractor started.

All the tractors I use have been switch to 12 volts unless of course they where in the first place and they still have the 6 volt starters on them. What kills a 6 volt starter is a poor starting engine that you sit and crank for long periods of time so the starter get hot and burns out but that can also happen to a 12 volt starter

As a past used tractor dealer and farmer I've converted or seen a ton of 6 volt starters used on converted 12 volt tractors "most" (not all) of which never had a problem.

HOWEVER it can be a bit tough on some of the older starter drives (or nose cones or gear teeth) and things that can help are: a) Use a smaller rated 12 volt battery NOT a big honking heavy duty super high CCA unit,,,,,, b) Use lighter gauge battery cables,,,,,,,,,,,c) Install an improved starter drive,,,,,,,,,,d) Don't let them crank for extended periods.

I've never understood this whole belief that it's "harder" on the starter drives... What's harder on the starter drives is them loafing into position on 6V, only partially engaging, and chewing up the edges of the teeth on the starter drive and ring gear.

On 12V they snap into place and get full engagement of the teeth. That satisfying "smack" you hear is indication of a good thing.
