Hydraulics to a CharLynn power steering unit

Planning on mounting a PS unit on my M loader tractor. The hydraulic pump for the loader is a PTO driven unit. There are two sets of controls, one to raise and lower the bucket, and one to control the grapple forks. Rather than mounting the C.L. pump on the side of the engine, would tapping into the grapple forks control work to supply hydraulics to the PS motor? I would lock this unit on so hydraulics would be supplied on demand. (This is what I do when using my log splitter) Please tell me if this will work or not. Thank you. Dr. Bert

Do you have a two or three spool valve for the loader or a two spool for loader and a separate single spool for the grapple? If you tie one spool back for the PS, you will not be able to use the other spools. In any case, that pto pump probably puts out way too much flow for the CharLynn steering unit. A flow divider might work. Look on Surplus Center website or other sites for a description.

It would work, only you need a flodivider as was said. Only I would put it in the line in front of the valves. Just make sure you get one rated for the gpm your pump puts out.

you will only be able to steer when you have the clutch out. I think you will be much happier mounting a power steering pump on the engine and making it it's own system.

if you've got the charlynn pump and parts that would be the way to go, then you'll be sure to have the correct pressure and flow.

Hayfarmer's advice is right on - your proposed setup will have power steering only when the clutch is engaged.

Get yourself a belt-driven pump so power steering is "full time".

Using the PTO pump has two disadvantages, first it is only on if the clutch is out, and secondly you would have to buy a flow divider.

Just pick up a used power steering pump off a car.

Thanks to all!!! Think all my questions have been answered. I have the CL pump and will probably install it, if a brace for the FE loader doesn't interfere.
