544 TA issue?

a friend was using his 544 to run out some sap lines last week and the tractor just stopped moving no noise nothing, got it towed to his shop and split it at the clutch on Tuesday, when the TA is in direct drive you can turn the input shaft and the wheels want to turn when you pull the lever back the input shaft freewheels , so while apart he changed the clutch etc, and put it back together still does not move even in direct drive,he called me at my work today and gave me the news, is there something deeper in the center section or the actual trans we need to looking at? hes pretty bummed right now but I didnt think a clutch and pressure plate was going to help but he wanted to try that route, any suggestions?

If it is like the 350, and I think it is, there is a small internally splined coupling that can shell out the splines suddenly and silently Been there done that.

Yes I would check the coupling that connects the drive shaft from main clutch to the input sun gear of the TA. I'm showing a cut-a-way picture and a picture of the TA clutch where the coupling slides over the top of the splines that are shown.

This morning I took some pictures of the drive shaft and the coupling. I'm thinking that if you look in the coupling you should be able to see that the splines are just about completely wore out.

I did clean up the coupling and gave it a coat of silver paint.
