Super A Starter

I have 6v neg ground, distributor Super A. It cranks really slow. Maybe get one revolution at a time. I was trying to get it started yesterday and I saw a little smoke coming from the starter. The positive cable to the starter was warm. Now it wont do anything. Doesn't even try to crank. I have 6+ volts at the battery and at the starter.

Did I fry the starter? (Is that even possible)
Can I buy a rebuild kit or does it need a complete rebuilt by a shop.

I have not disconnected the battery and put my 12v jump pack on the starter itself to see if it spins.

It is not the original starter as I have to push the pull rod to start it.

Thinking this might be the time to convert to 12v. Not going to be a parade tractor or at least a pretty one.

I have a mini denso alternator already that I might be able to use if I was to convert.

Would this starter work on a 12v system?
I would have to add a resister before the distributor/coil right?
Would I have to change just the light bulbs and not the light it self?

Sorry lots of questions but was ready to do some mowing with it yesterday and this happened.
Thanks

The starter motor needs to be rebuilt. If it is a IH starter, it is best to rebuild than replace with a off brand. It is likely dragging the armature on the field poles. If it
has for a long time, it might need a new armature. Jim

Thanks, I don't think it is an IH starter, is it?

The starter "looks" like a Delco original, but numbers on the tag tell the story. The saddle switch on the top can be either push or pull and is separate from the starter motor.
If the component got hot, it could be that connection and not the starter. I believe the starter is in need of rebuild due to the prior continued slow cranking. Jim

thanks again, I could not make out the tag on it. Ok going to find a place to rebuild it, or is it something I could do?

clean up communicator, brushes etc or completely redone at shop.

Have the starter rebuilt by a professional. They replace the bearings,regrind/test the armature, test the fields......Then install new heavy gauge cables(not the small automotive junk). It will start.Lok in your local phone book under 'Starter/alternator rebuilders'.There should be one in just about every larger city.

when that cable got warm it is telling you that is probably either bad or a bad connection. Yes I would get the starter refreshed by cleaning the commutator end new brushes and bearings. What kind of gen system that you have neg ground on a system that uses pos ground

had it checked out at a shop. Needed a new “lug” put on where the saddle switch connects. Was not making good enough contact. Thanks for the help
