Behlen PS Question

The Behlen PS unit on my 450-D tractor is no longer working like it should. Only works to one side and also tends to lock at times. I am thinking about replacing it with manual steering as I don't use the tractor much any more. Can I just connect the two hoses together and then replace it with a manual steering shaft? Or will I need to replace the PS diverter valve from the hydraulic tower and put in the the manual steering pressure relief valve? Also, I would have liked to get the PS unit rebuilt, but I can't find any place that does this any more. Thanks. Al

Do read Red Power Magazine,The Tractor Doctor near Osh Kosh Wisconsin, just had a article on them a while back, this last month it was on the Char-lynn unit, He last name is O'Neill. He can fix them.

I will give him a call as I only live about 60 miles away. I did read his article on rebuilding a Char-lynn unit in Red Power. But I think the problem with the Behlen units is that no one has parts for them anymore. Thanks for tip. Al

Im getting mine rebuilt right now at the old IH dealership. He was able to order all the parts needed.

Dan,
I would like to know if you where able to get parts from IH. Was yours just leaking or was it not working right? Think I saw that you could still get new seals from IH. But looking at my IH 400/450 parts manual, it looks like even back in the day individual internal parts where not available and you had to purchase the whole assembly. Thanks. Al

Do a search for Hi-Lo Equipment in Columbus Nebraska. Have heard they work with these units, remember Columbus is the home of Behlen, but don't do anything with the steering units anymore.

Al,
The person servicing my unit had new roll pins, springs, shims, and seals. There may have been other parts I didn't notice. I'm not sure where he got the parts. He bought them before I even dropped my unit off. I think he said he always replaces all of these wear parts. If you'd like to ask him any questions, his name is Alan and he is the service manager at Carter and Gruenewald in Juda, WI. He is most helpful. 608-934-5140

BTW, I tried calling Hi-LO over the course of a week and never got in touch with them.

HTH,
Dan

Where are you located?

I went to my local CaseIH dealer and they said part didn't exist and the entire unit was obsolete. When to CaseIH in Rossville KS and they had the parts to rebuild sitting on the shelf and I got the unit back in couple days. It ran about $240 with me removing and installing the unit on the tractor.

I tried to get hold of him this morning but the phone number I have doesn't seem to work anymore. But I have a friend in Ripon WI that had his Cub tractor fixed by him a year or so ago and it was shown in his Red Power Article. So maybe I can get the phone number from him. Probably like a lot of folks he just uses a cell phone. Al

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I live near Green Bay WI. But if I can't find someone local, maybe I can send the unit to them for rebuilding since they still have parts. Al

I stopped by my former IH dealer this morning that now just sells IH parts. We checked and all the roll pins, seals, springs, shims, and gaskets are still available from Case-IH. Only part not available is the sleeve that the roll pins go into. So if I cant' find someone who has rebuilt these in the past, I may try to do it myself. Not sure why some dealers say "no parts available" and others who look them up show they can still get them. Al

Some dealers like the one I mentioned above appreciate the business from the older equipment and have mechanics that have been around the block. Other dealers don't want to be bothered by antiquers and only want to sell and work on newish equipment. We have some of each around me.
