Farmall H Ammeter

Having trouble with ammeter.Ammeter shows discharge both while lights are on and when engine is running. There are three wires going to ammeter:The negative post has one wire to the starting switch. The positive post has one wire to the light switch and one wire to the generator. When I got the tractor the ammeter showed charge with the lights on and the engine running so I swapped the wires but it didn't work. Please help, thanks

Sounds like you need to do some simple trouble shooting and check battery voltage with it not running and then with it running. I figure it is 6 volts since you say generator so with it not running battery voltage should be around 6.5 volt and with it running if the generator is working as it should be it should read around 7-8 volts. If you do not get those reading then you have a bad generator or bad voltage regulator or battery

The ammeter is SUPPOSED to show a charge with the lights on and engine running. With the lights on and engine off, it will show a discharge. With the engine running, and lights off, it should break even at zero charge, except when recovering from starting.

Rusty is correct. If the tractor stopped charging and runs the battery down, then let us know. It was correct as it was. Jim
