IH 584 turning issue

I have recently acquired a 584 and am having trouble getting it to turn. The left front tire just slides along the ground digging a trench but the tractor barely turns. I have also noticed that even when going straight the left side really digs in and tears up the ground (front and rear wheels). Any suggestions on how to fish this?

That's a great question and I don't know. I don't have a manual for this tractor. Where is the differential lock?

Hi Jim, Diff Lock is foot pedal by your right heel, up is disengaged, down is Diff Locked.

Does the 584 have a loader on it? If so use the down pressure on loader to lift front end off the ground and check for:
1) Do the front wheels rotate freely? No seized front wheel bearings? Also check when weight comes on front wheel that the front
wheel doesn't rub on the spindle.
2) Can the front wheels be turned from left to right with the steering wheel?
3) If Diff Lock is on you can lift the foot pedal by hand but that does not always release Diff Lock.
Sometime driving straight forward and tap right brake and release then tap left brake and release will release DifF lock.

Thanks. The front wheels do turn freely and do not bind in any way. I think the differential being locked makes more sense as it seems the tractor is just pushing through the turn. I will work on that and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks guys!

I have also noticed that even when going straight the left side really digs in and tears up the ground (front and rear wheels).

That is strange. Is the left rear wheel "chewing" at the ground or does it seem to be "dragging?"

This is on flat hard ground right? The left side of the tractor isn't off in a ditch or a wet spot.

If it was just the front wheel, I would say steering alignment. Since the back wheel seems to be "tearing up the ground" too, the only things I can think of are maybe a dragging brake or seized axle bearing.

Did you drive this tractor before purchasing it?

Yes, this is on hard flat ground. I did drive the tractor before purchasing but the ground was very wet and I didn't notice this as a problem. The brakes are an issue that I am working on as well....it has no brakes. The person I bought it from said it was the master cylinders and had the new replacements. I put those on but still don't have brakes, so I am going to replace the O-rings and go from there on the brakes.

Ok, again, what does the left rear wheel seem to be doing?

Is it "dragging" (turning slower than the tractor is moving) or is it "chewing" (trying to go faster than the tractor is moving)?

Sorry, missed that part of your question.
The left rear is "chewing". I did check
today and the diff appears to be locked
down and stuck. I will have to spend some
time and try to get it freed up.
