Rebuilding an H Transmission on the Tractor.

I think I know the answer, but here goes. Can you rebuild the transmission on and H with out splitting the tractor? I know you need to pop the top to get to the gears, but I don't see any reason to split the tractor. Opinions or experience?

I took the H gears and shafts out of my H and swapped in a Super H set several years ago, without splitting the tractor. I dropped the Liftall and removed the top deck. If you have a way to hang the steering column off the ceiling or a frame or something it saves a lot of work to just pull it up enough to be out of the way without disconnecting the controls.

Thanks, that what I thought. I am working on an H puller and I want the gears and ring and pinion out of a W4 I have sitting here. I didn't want to have to deal with two tractor "explosions" to get it done. Shop space is at a premium anymore.

The ratios are taller (faster per gear) than an H. Is the engine tweaked enough to power higher ratios? Jim

I found it real easy to rig pulleys and rope and lift the top right straight up to the ceiling joists. Leave it there, and then lower it down. Thing's heavy for an old man.
