Ok back to the Farmall 300 carb a question

Found in the manual how you adjust it. Since I'm running rich I guess it is the main fuel adjustment screw I need to turn in. Now this tractor doesn't plow anymore. All it does as far as working hard is mow grass with about 2/3 to 3/4 throttle. When I drive it over to my Uncles worm farm to mow I'll open it up in 5th gear. But other than that, that is all it does.

So with that in mind, how should I go about adjusting it since I'm not going to be putting the motor under full load.

You may need to loosen the packing nut a bit, but then turn that screw all the way in, and back it out 2 full turns. The factory initial setting calls for 3 turns out, but for how you use the tractor, I think 2 turns will be enough. If the engine stumbles and misses under load, turn that screw out another 1/2 turn. You should never need to go beyond 3 turns out.

Thanks. Yeah this tractor has an easy life. Now saw it is the winter and there is a car in the ditch I need to pull out should I open it back up to where it currently is set?

Don't keep messing with it. Leave it set where you like it. Pulling a stuck car doesn't take any 'extra' power.Low gear at slow speed is where it's at. It uses more power just starting to move in high gear.If your plowing, yes you can turn up the gas a bit.

When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner?? I have found that many times a carb problem is really an air cleaner problem and the person has not dumped the water and mud in it and put in fresh new oil

The tractor will tell you if qnd when that screw needs to be turned further out. The engine will begin stumbling and missing.

For what it's worth, I sometimes pull a 2-14s plow with my H. The load screw on that carburetor is set at 3 turns out. The tractor runs just fine and pulls that plow just fine. Never lacks for power.

My way of setting: open throttle wide open when engine is warmed up

turn load needle in to where it starts to stumble

turn load needle out 2 turns. after that leave it alone unless you feel it has not got the power that you need.

Funny you mentioned that since the front end is jacked up as I was repacking the front bearings and waiting for the paint to dry I pulled the cleaner. Oil looked rather interesting and there was some nice crud at the bottom of the cleaner. I bought the tractor off Craigslist last June and starting using it right away as the Cub was down for mowing. So soon as I get the front wheels back on I'll give it a try and see if it is better before trying the Carb adjustment. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

You would not believe how many tractors I have worked on for people that had run problems and I found air cleaner oil cup full of water to the point when you took it off you got your hands wet because they where full to the top. Pretty much any more I check the air cleaner before I even try to start many of them

Yeah this wasn't full of water but it looked like there was some water in it. Interested to see how it runs now. I know I could tell a difference after I checked and readjusted some of the valves.
