A, SA, 100,130 How to check RPM'S ?

Just how would one "read" true RPM's on a A, SA, 100, 130 still on 6 volts ?

Setting high & idle RPM's, manual shows specific numbers.

If the tractor has coil and distributor ignition (NOT a magneto), a standard tach/dwell meter will read RPM on 6 volts.

Also an inductive tach (or timing light with an inductive pickup and RPM indicator) will read RPM on both distributor and mag ignition.

I have this old Niehoff T44 dwell-tach meter that will work on both and 6-12-24 volt.

Do a search on Amozon for a Photo-tachometer. The cheaper ones are imported now days, $10-$13 each, 0 to 10,000 rpm. They come complete with two AA batterys and several strips of reflective tape, you put a little 1/8"x1/8" piece on something that turns at engine rpm, pto, belt pulley, crank pulley. Push the button and aim at the tape, rpm appears in the display. Most have a red lazer pointer beam to help you aim.

Bit of advice, remove the battery when not in use. The cheap imported batterys tend to leak.

It's also able to be used on ANYTHING that rotates.

You might want to shop for an infared temp gun too, reads temps from way below Zero to 1000 degrees. Raytech is the best brand there.

Definitely the way to go. And since neither is dedicated to one machine you can use them anywhere.
I use the temp gun to confirm all cylinders firing via a low reading at the exhaust port. Or when checking wheel bearings on vehicle or trailers when towing.

Back in the day you would've used a tool like Russ's or you would use an inductive tachometer to read from the #1 plug wire. No such thing as a photo-tachometer, let alone a cheap one.
