Farmall 560 Clutch problem

I have a strange problem that happens to my clutch. My RT brake will lock when cold if not slowly applied but works fine after using it and when this happens I cannot shift tractor into gear (grinds like clutch not working) Last 2 times I adjusted T/A but this time adjusted and put back too original setting and all is ok T/A works and clutch works ( The Tractor has always moved the petal is almost let out at the top) I just don't understand the relation between locking brakes and the clutch. Any suggestions ? It has been doing this for awhile and as long as I do not lock brakes all works fine ?

I am not sure-but-does your clutch pedal pivot behind the step on the brake pedal cross shaft ? Maybe it is seizing up a bit causing the brake shaft to rotate without depressing the brake pedal? Mark.

Your brack is probably dirty and perhaps a bit rusty. My 400 was sticking(locking up). Just last week I took it apart and cleaned it up.Polished the ramps and balls.Buffed the pads and steel disks. Now it works as it should. Even slides the wheel!Cant help on the TA part. But the other posters answer makes sence.A binding of theparts.

The brake shaft (as noted) serves both the left brake, and the clutch pedal pivot. The rotation of the shaft could affect the clutch if worn or seized up. The pedal freeplay is usually about an inch and a quarter at the pedal to platform contact point. Jim

Our 560 diesel did something kind of like your brake issue. You could slowly push on it. Then a loud clung and you would stop quick. Asked the local IH guys. The brakes where dirty. All they did was clean them and adjusted them. Now it works fine. The shifting issue... We ALWAYS pull the torque back when we shift. When you pull it back it releases the pressure. Then shifts smooth.

That TA is out of adjustment. The clutch pedal must release the TA (like pulling it back) to allow clean shifts. Jim

Thanks for yall's input. I still do not understand how a locking brake (I watched and it does not move the clutch petal) causes the clutch not to work properly.I guess something internal must move when brake grabs just do not know what. I will address the brake problem but until this happens clutch and T/A work very well.

alliskid, you need to get a "how too book" and adjust your TA or you will be replacing it soon.

What you're describing (gets hard to shift in direct) is when I know mine needs adjusting.

Even if your TA isway out of adjustment, it DOES NOT *GRIND* when you try to shift.

It will be difficult to get out of gear, but once the binding is relieved, either by jamming on the gear lever, or by pulling the TA, it will shift smoothly. Again it will NOT grind.

This whole thing of the right brake locking when "cold" and the clutch grinding ONLY when the right brake is locked makes absolutely no sense.

There is no direct internal connection between the clutch and the right brake. The right brake is external to the tractor, and acts on the bull pinion. There is a differential, speed transmission, and TA unit in between the two. Literally dozens shafts, gears, and bearings.

The only direct connection between the brake and clutch is that shaft mentioned earlier.

The only thing I can think of is a long shot, but make sure the tractor is bolted together tightly at the bell housing? Maybe the tractor is coming apart there when the brake locks up and the tractor is lurching? I dunno. You've got a real "butterfly effect" thing going on there...
