1586 - What size cultivator?

I have a good running 1586 I use for tillage. Rear duals and a full set of weights on front. Anyone using/used a 1586 who can tell me what size field cultivator would be the max? Average soil, good topsoil with some clay in areas. Whatever is the consensus is the maximum it would pull, I will probably look for something about 2/3 that size. So if you tell me 30' I will look for something around 20'. I don't like to max out older tractors. Stuff breaks and then I have down time while I fix it. I should mention that any cultivator I look at is going to have straight tine harrow on the back end...no rolling baskets or anything fancy.

We have a lot of clay here and pull 24' with an 185 HP 4WD. I would say that you should pull 21' in nearly all conditions barring bald tires and would think 24' would be reasonable and if you had to you could pull off a couple shanks for easier going. 30' would be for pretty much light loamy ground that was well drained.

You could handle a 24' with ease. I ran one with 1086 in a pinch, usually had 2294 on it with front assist and no duals both of those are 130 HP tractors.

Well Dave, up here we don't have sandy soil, or heavy soil, just stony loamy soil. We pull a 22' Sunflower that has a 5 bar tine leveler on it. It has 8 inch shovels on it, we pull it with a 1486 that runs 170 HP. Power isn't really an issue, but traction can be, especially if it's a little greasy on top or you're trying to float around the wet spots to dry them out. It has 20.8-38 rear tires and duals. I pulled it with the 1086 which runs around 150 HP I'd guess, and has 18.4-38 rears and duals, and it pulls it surprisingly well, but traction is an issue for sure if it's greasy at all. Both tractors have loaded inside tires, and would probably be much better if I hung a bunch of iron in the wheel centers, but I like to have the option to slip a tire instead of tear up something.

We pull a 24 foot in 4thlow to go the first time on bean stubble then shift up to first high for the second time with less depth and more leveling. This is with a 1466 18-38 duals loaded inside tires. Power and traction is not a problem. Sand to heavy clay dirt. Flat to hilly. The difference in fuel to pull the 20 ft and the time difference will be surprising verus the 24ft. I figure to cover about 80 acres a day going over it twice with about a tank of fuel. No lights on.
