I have an early C with battery ignition and a generator with saddle mount cutout / four position light switch. I don't know whether the distibutor was added later, neither my parts or operators manuals shows this combination. Actually, the wiring diagram in the parts book shows a regulator with the magneto, "special 501-47125" but under the generator section it depicts a Delco 1101355, adjustable third brush genny with cutout for that serial number range. In the operator's manual there is a section for starting and lighting equipment for tractors without V regulator and it mentions only magneto and relay. Conflicting info for sure. I know my options and tend to lean towards "original" but the problem here is what was original. If I keep it as is, does anyone know if a rebuild kit for the 1100501 will work for the 1101355. Is the adjustable third brush the only difference?

Yes they will work. Yours original had a saddle mount cut-out instead of a regulator earlier ones were that way. The "mag" was an option as it could have came with either mag or dist. When you regulator was installed some changes were made in the charging system as you didnt need the wire from the field going to the four position lite sw. Replacement of the cut-out are no longer but regulators are made for that generator but you do need the correct regulator for that generator to work properly. hope this answers your questions if not will be glad to help i am very familiar with those charging systems. Make sure all parts in the system have a good connection to ground where they are mounted. I use an OHM METER and with one lead to the battery + Terminal which is ground in that system the other probe is moved to gen body then regulator base then to lite sw control knob this insures all systems will work if they are good

I have two, 1949 "C's" both are set up just like yours. IH distributor, 3 brush gen., saddle mount cutout and four position switch. I think it was a normal set up depending on s/n breaks. Without getting into s/n breaks I believe the 48's were mag with same set up otherwise. In 1950 +/- came regulators, three position switch and two brush generators. These are somewhat rounded off time frames. Some machines that were originally mag were converted to a vertical Delco distributor also.

The mag was an option till middle 50s the I-H dists came out in 49 if i remember. Old wives tales in those
days that the dist was better as it would start easier.
