Rear Wheel Centers

I have a two part question.

How interchangeable are the centers? I'm looking at H and M mostly but I'm also curious if the 300 and 400 might be the same.

I was thinking to try getting a center or two to run 3-4 rears on one for field work.

Second part what's a fair price on a center in good shape?

I can't advise on price but they were produced in such quantities that should make them be not much more than that of scrap. I believe that the H and 300 axle diameter is 2-1/2 inches, while the M and 400 was 2-3/4 inches.

Maybe, The smaller tractors could have been fitted with "corn picker rear axle option" which was the heavier axle saw a 460 like that recently and had to do a double take and some research

During the 300/400 series production IH switched from deep well drop center style rear rims with 6-hole
cast wheels to 8-hole wheels with double bevel rims. The 8-hole rims usually work in place of the 6-hole,
there are some differences in keyways, some wheels only have one key.

No heavy duty rear axles available on H/SH, but a few 300's and more 350's got the option, 2-3/4" axle
like the M/SM/400/450.

Price for rear centers varies. The 6-hole are normally pretty cheap. The 8-hole centers much more
expensive, especially M size. The rims can be placed in 4 different positions on the wheel allowing an M
to be hauled on an 81-82 inch wide trailer without turning the wheels on the axle.

(quoted from post at 20:13:47 01/31/18) Rein, I think the axle diameters are a different size between H and M. and also 300 to 400. Others may know for sure.

H, Super H, 300, 350, and 460 have the same diameter axles. M, Super M, 400, 450, and 560 all have the same dimeter axles.

The cast centers for the single hump rims will not interchange with the double bevel rims. If you want double bevel rims on your M, you will need the cast centers from a 400 or 450.

All the 460's we sold had same diameter axle as M through 560. We
never broke the axles on the 460, it was the axle housing that
broke.

I think early 460's had the smaller axles, but they were switched out for larger axles during production due to people putting M-sized loads on 460s and breaking the smaller axles.

Very first ones we got in had the larger axles and all that I put the updating final drive package in had the larger axle. Never saw a small axle on a 460 around here. It was an option that apparently the district pushed.

What kind of loads broke these axles? The M and H were different but not that different.
